What’s New in the 2020 Ford Super Duty Work Truck?

The new 2020 F‑250 and F‑350 Super Duty pickups with next-level power, capability, durability, and advanced technology are why Ford has been America’s truck leader for 42 years in a row. Two new powertrains provide the strength for the most demanding jobs — an all-new 7.3L PFI V8 gas engine and the third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine. Each engine is paired with the new 10‑speed TorqShift automatic transmission with Selectable Drive Modes. And new for 2020, the Tremor Off-Road Package is ready for the urge to venture onto rugged terrain.

Super Duty Power

For 2020, the Super Duty F‑250 and F‑350 Pickups gain power and capability with an all-new 7.3L PFI V8 with outstanding low-end torque. Next-level power comes with the third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel which packs more horsepower and torque. Both of these engines are mated to a new TorqShift 10‑speed automatic transmission.

The all-new, Ford-engineered 7.3L PFI V8 creates 430 horsepower and 475 lb.‑ft. of torque. Diesel fans will be happy the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel has been upgraded to deliver 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb.‑ft. of torque. The 7.3L V8 and 6.7L diesel are both mated to a new 10‑speed TorqShift automation transmission, which provides five Selectable Drive Modes. The new engines give Super Duty customers three engine choices — the standard engine remains the proven, reliable 6.2L V8 with 385 horsepower and 430 lb.‑ft. of torque.

6.7L Turbo Diesel V8

Standard V8 for F‑250 and F‑350 models provides 385 horsepower and 430 lb.‑ft. of torque. This time-tested engine is paired with the TorqShift‑G 6‑speed automatic transmission in the F‑250 and with the new TorqShift 10‑speed auto transmission in the F‑350. This engine offers flex-fuel capability that allows it to operate on E85 fuel.

The all-new Ford-designed 7.3L port-fuel injected (PFI) V8 features fewer parts, improved maintenance access and lower long-term ownership costs than the 6.8L V10 engine it replaces.

The 7.3L V8 features a proven overhead valve design and variable cam timing to improve operating efficiency. Paired with the TorqShift 10‑speed automatic transmission, this engine generates an estimated 430 horsepower and 475 lb.‑ft. of torque. The 7.3L V8 is available on all trims except for the Limited, which gets the 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel standard.

This third-generation 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel features a redesigned fuel injection system with more precise fuel delivery and a re-engineered turbocharger. The new diesel design includes structural enhancements to handle higher cylinder pressure and increased output. The Power Stroke diesel is standard on Super Duty Limited. This latest version of the Power Stroke produces a game-changing 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb.‑ft. of torque.

The new TorqShift 10‑speed automatic transmission was developed with heavy-duty applications as its mission. The new transmission offers a wider gear ratio span than the 6‑speed transmission it replaces, which provides smoother shifts and the capability to meet the most demanding towing conditions. Super Duty trucks can also adapt to the conditions with five Selectable Drive Modes: Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery, and Deep Snow/Sand. The new 10‑speed transmission fits in the same space as the outgoing 6‑speed and weighs only 3.5 lbs. more.

Transmission Drive Modes

Drive modes change the performance of electronic stability control, traction control, engine throttle response, transmission shifting and steering feel. Select the desired mode using the button on the end of the column shifter or side of the center console shifter.

  • Normal — A balanced combination of comfort and handling for everyday driving
  • Tow/Haul — Improves transmission operation with trailers and heavy loads, especially over steep grades.
  • Eco — Helps deliver enhanced fuel efficiency with trade-offs in performance and comfort/
  • Slippery — Designed for bad weather; tuned for optimum low-speed traction and confident stability at a higher speed.
  • Deep Snow/Sand — For taking on deep snow or while on soft, dry sand
  • Rock Crawl — Prepares the truck for low-speed rock crawling (Tremor Only)
